1988
- 1999
Mudhoney, as you may or may not know,
was a grunge band from, of course, Seattle. Band members were Matt Lukin
(bass), Dan Peters (Drums), Steve Turner (Lead Guitar), and Mark Arm (Vocals,
Guitar). In my opinion, Mudhoney, defines grunge music more than an other
band. Grunge music isn't about the huge arena rock shows of Nirvana, it
is about being stupid and bored and rocking out. I'm not saying Mudhoney
is stupid...after all they did perform the theme to Bill Nye the Science Guy.
On a larger scale, Mudhoney is about more than grunge, they are about indie
rock as a whole. Although Mudhoney has been on a major label (reprise)
for quite some time, their soul is still indie. Mudhoney is about having
fun and rocking out, and drinking beer, and rocking out some more.
Here is a brief review of the
Mudhoney concert that is was lucky enough to attend. I got the review
from Peter Trahm's swell Mudhoney page (Mudhoney from seattle link below), and
I'm just using it becuase I'm too lazy to write my own for now.
3/12/99
Bottleneck. Larwence, KS
Supported
By: Creature Comforts, Dragqueen
Set:
Suck You Dry, Poisoned Water, A Thousand Forms of Mind, Here Comes Sickness,
Real Low Vibe, Judgement Rage..., Sweet Young Thing, Touch Me I'm Sick, This Is
the Life, I Have to Laugh, You Got It, Oblivion, Who You Drivin' Now?, Ghost, I
Will Fight No More Forever, Beneath the Valley... Encore: When Tomorrow Hits,
F.D.K., In 'N' Out Of Grace, Hate the Police
Notes:
The guys seemed to be in a great mood. Matt had fun with the mic stand before
starting the encore, using it as a machine gun, complete with the requisite
noises. He also held up a sign from the audience that said Queen Bitch (a David
Bowie song covered by Green River) before leaving after the regular set, and
made a comment about how he loved that song. During In 'N' Out of Grace, Mark
introduced the band, and thanked everyone for coming to Lawrence and the
surrounding areas. He said people were here from Omaha, NE and as far away as
Ann Arbor, MI. That prompted him to say that when he heard that, it made them
feel like they were doing the right thing. Mark introduced Hate the Police,
with "this song isn't ours, but we wish it was."
Unfortunately, bassist Matt
Lukin (who the Pearl Jam song Lukin was written about) retired from music after
the 99 tour. So, the future of Mudhoney is rather up in the air at the
moment. Mark Arm is currently in the band Monkeywrench which he has been
in for some time. They played a few dates with Pearl Jam earlier this
year.
